After weeks of bitter winter cold, a sign of spring awakens hope.
Daffodils pushing through the winter ground cover says God has
remembered us and promises new life. Lent means spring. This
season reminds us that what seemed indeed to be dead is alive
and growing. Ash Wednesday Mass reminds us that we are of the earth and will return to it again; the circle of life. Our present mission is to be new life for the world. To somehow push through the heavy cold coverings of our hearts and to give secret alms, pray closed door prayers, and fast in unnoticeable ways.

There is so much suffering in this world that calls to us. Anonymous alms are needed on all fronts. We have forgotten that we are called to love and not hate those who are different from us—here is a good cause to pray together for mercy and understanding. When domination over others is in the news constantly; fasting for the poor, the humble, the stranger will only be noticed by our merciful God who is grieved when his people abandon the Gospel. Let us be the new life that that pushes the cold darkness of hatred and greed away to let in the light and love of Easter.
